Ronny Chieng

and comedian. Chieng is currently a senior reporter on The Daily Show on Comedy
Central and creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student
which premiered on ABC (Australia) and Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was
born to a Malaysian Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Chieng was raised
in Singapore as well as in the United States, living in Manchester, New Hampshire
from 1989 to 1994. Chieng performed with Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy
festival in 2013. Chieng was asked to audition for The Daily Show's
correspondent position two years after. Chieng was named one of the top 10
comics to watch by Variety in July 2016. In October 2016, Chieng appeared as a
guest on The Daily Show to discuss his response to an interview with Jesse
Watts on a Fox News segment that many considered racist. Chieng broadcast an
expletive-laden critique of the segment on Fox News that was deemed
conservative by many. He also visited NewYork City's Chinatown where Watters
had mocked the residents. The viral video was featured in Slate and the
Washington Post. In his young years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. Even
though he's lived in Australia for more than a decade he does not have
citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia. Chieng joked in 2018
that he was cynophobic, but afterwards, he said he was completely unafraid of
dogs.
